Vineyard Notes
The 35-acre Brick Barn estate vineyard lies just north of the Santa Ynez River in a largely unexplored winegrowing corridor near the city of Buellton in the western Santa Ynez Valley. The 2019 Fatalist Syrah comes from two estate blocks—Block 8 (Clone 1), which produces dark fruit with robust tannins; and Block 14 (Clone 470) which yields a lighter character and red fruit tones. These blocks are planted along an upper highland at an elevation of 550 feet. Here, rocky loam and limestone soils provide ideal conditions for classic Rhône varieties. Persistent sun exposure ensures ripe flavors, while the Pacific Ocean—just 10 miles away—delivers daily cooling that maintains fruit acidity and structure. All together, these clones and growing conditions combine to produce a concentrated cool-climate Syrah with spicy, delicate nuances.
Winemaker Notes
The 2019 Fatalist Syrah is a special selection that underwent extended aging for three years in two 100-percent new French oak barrels to achieve optimal maturity and integration. The entirety of our estate’s 2019 Syrah fruit was night harvested, destemmed and cold soaked for a gentle extraction of color and flavor. In the classic Côte-Rôtie style, a small lot of whole-cluster Viognier (5%) was incorporated into the fermentation to intensify the color and lift to the aroma profile. After fermentation, each lot was then aged in French oak barrels over a period of 20 months. At the 20-month mark, Winemaker Adrian Bolshoi tasted through all of the barrels and selected the best two of the vintage and reserved them for FATALIST treatment. This selection was held for an additional 16 months of barrel aging prior to bottling. These barrels featured extra tight grain and medium-light toasting to ensure a notable yet seamless assimilation of oak influence. The result is a Syrah for the ages.

Syrah has been a signature variety at the Brick Barn estate since day one. Now comes the inaugural vintage from our ultra-premium Fatalist line, representing a special selection of the finest two barrels from the 2019 vintage.
