Vineyard Notes
The 35-acre Brick Barn estate vineyard lies just north of the Santa Ynez River in a largely unexplored winegrowing corridor near the city of Buellton in the western Santa Ynez Valley. Here, persistent sun exposure ensures ripe flavors, while the Pacific Ocean—just 10 miles away—delivers daily cooling that maintains fruit acidity and structure. Our Viognier is planted to two small blocks totaling just under four acres. Here, sandy riverbed soils foster vivid aromatics in our Viognier fruit, while the persistent marine breezes help maintain vibrant acidity right through full maturity. Tight 6x3 vine spacing ensures that yields are kept in check for the sake of natural flavor intensity.
Winemaker Notes
The 2021 growing season was marked by moderate summer temperatures and steady harvest weather, resulting in a standout vintage at the Brick Barn estate. The Viognier fruit was harvested on September 21. After night harvesting, the fruit was gently pressed and cold settled for seven days prior to fermentation. Aiming for a more delicate expression of the Viognier grape, Winemaker Adrian Bolshoi cold fermented the juice in stainless steel tanks with Aroma White yeast, which was chosen to accentuate the fruit’s naturally bright flavors and floral aromatics. After fermentation, the wine was cold aged in stainless steel for eight months prior to bottling. A small portion of the wine was aged in a European acacia barrel, which imparted a touch of added roundness and honeycomb character to the mouthfeel.

The rich vibrancy of the 2021 Viognier ensures excellent versatility with food. Recommended pairings include grilled chicken, bánh mì, seared scallops, and fruit and cheese plates.

The Brick Barn estate’s sandy soils and brisk coastal climate produce a vivid expression of the Viognier grape, as reflected in this wine’s bright, refreshing character.

Viognier is an elegant and delicious white that pairs exceptionally with a charcuterie platter, pasta or fish. It's one of my Brick Barn favorites! It's crisp and delicious and provides a nice alternative for us chardonnay lovers.

My favorite white wine! Great by itself, but pairs beautifully with just about anything. It's a perfect summer wine but I drink it all year round. 5 star for sure!
