What is Wine Tasting, Really?

Wine tasting is about more than sipping wine—it’s about experiencing aroma, flavor, body, and terroir. It’s a fun, educational process that connects you to the story of the vineyard and the land it comes from.

Step by Step Tasting Tips for First-Time Visitors

If you’re new to wine tasting, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Wine tasting isn’t about getting everything “right”; it’s about slowing down, using your senses, and discovering what you enjoy. Here’s a simple, step by step guide to help you make the most of your visit and savor every pour like a pro.

🍷 Step 1 – Look: Take in the Color

Before you take that first sip, hold your glass up to the light or against a white background. Notice the wine’s color, clarity, and depth. Is it a deep, inky red? That could point to a bold, full-bodied varietal like our Cabernet Franc, which often carries notes of dark berries and spice. Or maybe it’s a pale gold with hints of green—that’s likely a light, aromatic white like our Viognier, known for its floral and stone fruit notes.

Clarity matters too: a clear, sparkling wine suggests good filtering and balance, while cloudiness might hint at an unfiltered or more natural style. It’s your first impression—take a moment to appreciate it.

🍷 Step 2 – Swirl: Wake It Up

Next, give your glass a gentle swirl. This might feel a little fancy, but there’s a purpose behind it! Swirling exposes more surface area of the wine to the air, helping to release its aromas. It’s kind of like stretching before a workout—it gets everything moving.

Tip: Keep the base of the glass on the table and use small circular motions if you’re worried about spills.

🍷 Step 3 – Smell: Let the Aromas Speak

Now, bring the glass to your nose and inhale deeply. What do you smell? This is one of the most enjoyable—and personal—parts of tasting. Some people pick up ripe berries, citrus zest, or fresh cut herbs. Others might notice vanilla, leather, or even earthy tones like forest floor or tobacco.

Don’t stress about identifying every single note. Start with big categories: fruity, floral, spicy, or oaky. The more you taste and smell, the more confident you’ll become. And if something reminds you of childhood summers or holiday baking—go with it! Wine is as much about memory and emotion as it is about flavor.

🍷 Step 4 – Sip: Taste and Reflect

Finally, take a small sip and let it roll over your tongue. Notice the texture—does it feel light and crisp, or rich and velvety? Is it dry or slightly sweet? Pay attention to how the flavors evolve. Some wines hit you with bright fruit right away, while others build slowly with layers of spice, earth, or minerality.

Try to identify the finish too—how long do the flavors linger after you swallow? A long, smooth finish is a hallmark of a well balanced wine.

Bonus tip: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Our tasting room hosts love helping guests learn and explore, whether you’re a seasoned sipper or just getting started.

Wine Tasting Is About Enjoyment—Not Perfection

Remember, there’s no “right” way to taste wine, and you don’t need a sommelier’s vocabulary to enjoy the experience. Trust your senses, stay curious, and most importantly—have fun with it. Each glass tells a story, and every tasting is a chance to discover something new.

Cheers to your first (or next) unforgettable visit!

Common Wine Tasting Terms to Know

  • Dry – A wine with little to no residual sugar, meaning it doesn’t taste sweet. Most red wines and many whites fall into this category.

Tannins – Naturally occurring compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems (and sometimes from oak barrels). Tannins give red wine that slightly puckering, drying sensation on your tongue—think of strong black tea.

Finish – The lingering flavor and sensation that stays with you after you swallow. A “long finish” is usually a sign of a well-made wine.

Body – Refers to the weight or fullness of the wine in your mouth. Light-bodied wines feel crisp and refreshing, while full-bodied wines feel richer and more robust—like the difference between skim milk and whole milk.

Acidity – The freshness or brightness in a wine. Higher acidity makes wine feel crisp and mouthwatering—common in white wines and some lighter reds.

Oak – A flavor or aroma often found in wines aged in oak barrels. It can add notes of vanilla, spice, toast, or even coconut. Red wines like Cabernet and some Chardonnays often have oaky characteristics.

Bouquet / Aroma – The smell of the wine. “Aroma” typically refers to the scents from the grapes, while “bouquet” refers to more complex smells that develop with aging.

Legs – The streaks that form on the inside of your glass after swirling. While often noticed, legs don’t necessarily indicate quality—they’re mostly influenced by alcohol and sugar content.

Don’t worry if you’re unsure of these terms—our friendly staff is always happy to explain as you sip. Wine tasting is about exploring at your own pace, so never hesitate to ask questions or share what you’re experiencing.
