Discover the Winemaking Legacy of Santa Barbara County

Vineyard and sun in Santa Ynez Valley California

Santa Barbara County is more than just a picturesque coastal destination—it’s a world class wine region with a legacy that spans centuries. From mission era plantings to globally acclaimed varietals, the winemaking legacy of Santa Barbara County is as dynamic as the landscape itself.

At Brick Barn Wine Estate, we’re proud to be a part of this ongoing story. Nestled in the heart of Buellton, our estate reflects the innovation, resilience, and passion that define this incredible wine country.

A Brief History of Winemaking in Santa Barbara County

Winemaking in Santa Barbara County dates back to the late 1700s, when Spanish missionaries planted the region’s first vines. These early wines were made for sacramental use but laid the groundwork for an agricultural legacy that would blossom centuries later.

The modern wine movement didn’t begin until the late 1970s. With cool coastal climates, varied elevations, and diverse soils, Santa Barbara County emerged as one of California’s most promising wine regions—particularly for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rhone varietals.

What Makes Santa Barbara County Wines Unique

Santa Barbara County is defined by its traverse mountain ranges—one of the few places in North America where mountains run east to west. This geography creates valleys that funnel cool ocean breezes deep inland, resulting in a longer growing season and wines with rich complexity and balanced acidity.

Key AVAs (American Viticulture Areas) within Santa Barbara County include:

  • Santa Ynez Valley (home to Brick Barn)
  • Sta. Rita Hills
  • Los Olivos District
  • Ballard Canyon
  • Santa Maria Valley

Each AVA brings its own unique microclimates and terroir, producing expressive wines that reflect the land.

Brick Barn’s Place in the Santa Barbara Legacy

Brick Barn Wine Estate sits on what was once a working Arabian horse ranch, now transformed into a sustainably farmed vineyard and estate winery in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA.

Our approach blends tradition with modern winemaking techniques. From hand harvesting grapes to aging select wines in French oak barrels, every step honors the region’s heritage while looking toward the future.
